Anxiety is a state of fear which can be triggered by certain thoughts or situations. Everyone can have anxiety once in a while, however those with anxiety disorders have overwhelming amounts of these feelings and anxiety usually plays a significant role in their lives. It can restrict them from going to specific places and can hold them back from performing certain activities.

 

Some common (mental and physical) symptoms of anxiety can include:

  • constant nervousness or pessimism

  • feelings of restlessness

  • feelings of dizziness

  • tense muscles

  • increased heartbeat

  • worry about particular objects or circumstances

  • trouble falling asleep

  • trouble focusing on tasks

  • dry mouth

 

Causes of anxiety and techniques to manage anxiety’s impact mainly depend on the type of anxiety an individual has.

 

​According to the CDC, teens can very likely have some sort of an anxiety disorder if they show these signs:
​

  • having separation anxiety from parents or guardians

  • having phobias of specific things or situations

  • being fearful of going to places with a high concentration of people and socialization

  • being worried about the future and bad things happening

  • experiencing incidents with sudden, intense fears triggering physical symptoms like heart pounding, having trouble breathing, feeling dizzy, feeling shaky, or feeling sweaty

Even though these signs may show through, they must get diagnosed by a mental health professional in order to be labelled with that certain disorder.
